Eight scouts attended the Okpik winter camping trek at the Northern Tier High Adventure Base in Ely, MN over the weekend. Highlights included a hike out to the campsite, cross-country skiing, a dog sled ride, demolition derby sledding, and sleeping out on a frozen lake in "quinzhees" or snow shelters that they built. All scouts earned the "Zero Hero" award for sleeping out in sub-zero weather, several earned the "Bizhiw" award for staying outside for two nights. This was a very challenging experience, but all did very well and learned a lot about cold-weather camping techniques. Congratulations, scouts, you can be very proud of yourselves! |
